Tax Assurance Group Member (1 post, closes 26 June 2026)

Revenue Scotland is looking to appoint a new member to its Tax Assurance Group (TAG).

About the role

TAG plays a central role in Revenue Scotland’s Tax Governance Framework and advises our operational teams on some of the most important and challenging tax issues facing Revenue Scotland. The group provides assurance to the CEO of Revenue Scotland regarding the robustness of operational decision making, processes and governance. 

As a member of TAG you will bring your expertise in tax law or compliance, public administration, litigation, or other relevant tax experience, to advise and provide constructive challenge to Revenue Scotland operational teams on aspects of:

  • compliance cases where disputes have arisen 
  • potential and live litigation cases
  • operational decision-making 
  • identifying necessary changes to operational procedures and training needs, as well as advising on areas where legislative change may be required

The ideal candidate will have an in-depth knowledge of tax regimes, litigation processes and an understanding of the wider environment in which Revenue Scotland operates. 

You will work alongside TAG members from within Revenue Scotland and other external members of the group.

The appointment will be for an initial period of 24 months and may be extended by mutual agreement.

Skills sought

We are seeking applications from individuals who:

  • have a broad understanding of tax matters and litigation processes. A detailed knowledge of the devolved taxes is not necessary
  • can analyse and use evidence and interpret and apply complex legislation to make recommendations to help Revenue Scotland teams make robust fact and evidence-based decisions
  • understand how governance and risk management help us to operate at the highest standards, promoting effective working practices and understanding good governance principles.

The appointment process will include an interview with Revenue Scotland’s internal TAG members. It is anticipated that sifting will take place in the week commencing 29 June, with interviews taking place in early July.

Interviews will be conducted via Microsoft Teams. Please ensure you have a suitable space to complete a virtual interview/assessment if selected and a device which has the Microsoft Teams application downloaded. You should ensure there is sufficient Wi-fi/Broadband capacity to carry both audio and video feeds. Candidates may be subject to additional background checks prior to confirmation of appointment.

Additional Information

Remuneration for this post will be £350 per day for every 7 hours (this includes meeting preparation) devoted to performing your functions on a pro rata basis. Meetings are typically scheduled to take place on a monthly basis but frequency will be dependent on the level of business or matters requiring consideration. The role will not typically require more than 10-15 days of your time per year. Most meetings are conducted on Microsoft Teams, but some meetings may be held in person.

Travel, subsistence, preparation for meetings and reasonable dependent carer allowance incurred because of carrying out the duties associated with this appointment will be reimbursed. You are not entitled to a pension in respect of your appointment, and you are not entitled to any gratuity or compensation when your appointment ends (whatever the reason).

Tax Operations Administrator Internship (Closes 17 June 2026)

Salary: £27,164 - £30,281 (pro rata for part time)

The purpose of this internship is to give the intern meaningful, hands‑on experience of working in a public sector tax organisation. The role is designed to help someone develop confidence, skills, and practical experience in an office‑based environment, while making a real contribution to the work of Revenue Scotland.
